MINIMALISM = IDENTIFY THE ESSENTIAL + ELIMINATE THE REST
Over the years, I have worked hard to cut back on consuming non-essential pieces in my wardrobe. Gone are the days of fast fashion, and purchasing quick pieces that are trendy or “in the moment.” As of late, I have been trying to invest in pieces that make me feel good as a consumer but that also give back, support great causes, or are ethical/sustainable. Here’s how!
Since we moved into our new home, a LEED Platinum renovation in the city, my consumer habits have changed. These days, we review every product for recycling instructions, we try and consume more organic/chemical free foods, and we are constantly aiming for a greener lifestyle! As a life/style/beauty blogger, that transcends into my fashion and skincare picks too! Exploring the internet, I recently discovered EVERLANE, an ethical and transparent apparel company – aimed at doing more than just good. I love knowing where my garments are coming from and how they are working to create positive change.
Recently, I have been donating old jeans to Madewell as a part of their Denim Donation program. They take old and worn denim and up-cycle them into housing insulation to keep houses cool in the summer and warm in the winter! I LOVE being able to give back, and see clothes find their way into a better second-life! It is incredible to see just how Madewell can make such amazing things happen through this program.
These purchases make me feel empowered, make a positive impact on the environment, and help create change!
Didn’t know fashion could make you feel this kind of good, did you?
To tout another horn, local RVA jewelry maker, Maslo Jewelry, often works with Pets for Vets, helping pair former military vets with shelter dogs to provide comfort and company! Its amazing, how she creates incredibly streamlined and architectural pieces that have such heart and soul! Don’t even get me started on this tote bag!! Local boss babe Reana of Rena.Iman donates a portion of her proceeds from these leather goods to women’s shelters here in Virginia!
Giving back gives the best warm fuzzies during the holidays, and I am so excited to challenge you all to find a way to have a purpose behind your purchase! Elect to shop ethically, support local, and do better when you buy!
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON?
